Mirrors

Look at the photos and artworks on the subject of mirrors.

Task 1: Collect keywords on your own in a mind map: What do you associate with the mirror?

Task 2: Which of the photos appeals to you the most? Choose one and explain the reasons for your choice in writing.

Task 3: Now discuss your keywords and your selected photos in your group of four. Add the terms of the other group members to your MindMap and then discuss the question: How are the mirrors used in the photos and what impression do they create? Write down your ideas in the portfolio.

Task 4: Now take a closer look at „The ring“ by Arnaud Lapierre and read the following text.

Simple, amazing: French designer Arnaud Lapierre’s „Ring“ recently fascinated and captivated pedestrians in Paris‘ Place Vendôme. In collaboration with Bavarian car manufacturer Audi, the artist created an installation using mirrored cubes that, stacked in a ring shape, offer a wealth of reflections: Due to the different angles of the cubes, the surroundings are reflected many times from different perspectives, which again and again creates a completely new image for the viewer. The designer himself described the „Ring“ as an installation that represents the network of the urban space and summarizes its rhythm, flow, organization and spatial conditions.
With the temporary installation Arnaud Lapierre wants to interpret the urban space. At the same time, he leaves a lot of room for interpretation to the viewers. The mirrors virtually fissure the environment, only to quietly reassemble it as a new image. Another interesting dynamic is created when the viewer walks around or enters the installation. With each step, the image in the mirror cubes and the entire context changes.

Arnaud Lapierre uses the reflections of the mirrors to create a composite image of the surroundings. But how exactly does this work? What do different reflections have to do with diffirent angles? What is a reflection? We now want to get to the bottom of this question.
